Sadly competing nowadays means exploiting, ask the third world.
I don’t think some people are more humane than others, I think some societies have sounder values which in turn permeate the people.

Raids and “warfare” have been around at least since agriculture was invented, and likely for much longer. But ever since villages and fields had permanent locations real estate and its produce have been fought over.
HUMANS have been fighting for as long as we have been Human. And given that even Chimps have “wars”, I would bet that it goes back a LOT further than that.

Get real, cultures that are not ISOLATED compete for all sorts of things with other groups; they HAVE to!
But competing does not automatically mean exploiting inferiors.
Why do you think that some groups of humans are inherantly more “humane”?
Humans are humans everywhere, only the institutions change.

Empires have been waging war for so long that people don’t believe there have ever existed or could ever exist a peaceful society, it’s not even possible in their worldview, how cynic.
We’re better than that.
The sami people/culture, though I wouldn’t call it a major culture.
There is lots of isolated tribes of people that have been peaceful for as long as their oral history can remember.
The thing is, major cultures had to expand by violence, that is not an excuse for the behaviour. Isolated tribes that didn’t simply got squeezed out, it’s the nature of the game being played courtesy of the violent empires, in time there would be nobody else.
Name ONE major culture that did NOT expand over disadvantaged neighbors?
JUST ONE!
Mesapotamian, Egyptian, Greek, Phoenician, Hebrew, Indian, Japanese, Chinese, Romans, Celts, Franks, Saxons, English, French, German, Dutch, Italian, Islamic, Spanish, HAWAIIANS FOR GOD’S SAKE, Thais, Koreans, Canadians, Russians, and Americans; ALL EVIL!
NOW, list ONE civilization that had more justice for its neighbors than the less than perfect U.S. had in the last century?
